Woodland Sharks and other Collages
After my interim assessment collages I went back to collage and re-visited my choice of imagery and compositions. Inspired by John Stezaker, I started off trying to use simple shapes and cuts as shown in the collages pictured above. The bear piece is also in the style of his work as by completely removing the bear face I have tried to create an illusion of a face using the space created by the tree branches. At my interim assessment it was suggested I try using other paintings as a base for my collages and Frida Kahlo was an artist I was suggested to research so I combined one of her portrait pieces with a photograph of my own.
For these collages all the scenery imagery is my own taken on my dog walks. I plan to use more of my own scenery photos in collages as it adds a personal element.
One collage I found to work well was this shark piece. I like the fact that it is a simple image made of only two components but works based on context that the choice of animal doesn't fit in an everyday woodland scene.
One artist I was recommended in my tutorials was David Mach's collage works. Mach makes very busy large scale scenes in which you could find something different each time you looked at some examples. I was also told that Mach has a interesting way of working in which he collects and files all his imagery in to labelled boxes in which to pick from. I have decided to do something similar and create a digital file system to store images I might wish to collage with.
