Patricia Piccinini

Patricia Piccinini The Young Family (2002)

Working across a variety of mediums, Piccinini's more well known works would be her hyper-realistic sculptures. Her transgenic creatures have often been seen as controversial, with viewers finding them grotesque and uncomfortable, yet that is not Piccinini's intent, and the soft expressions makes them innocent and gentle natured which draws an audience to these curious creatures.

Piccinini's work comments and asks questions about the combination of science and nature. Genetic engineering, biotechnology and the other interventions science can make on nature are ideas present in her work as she creates beings from a sci-fi like future. Whether drawn to or repulsed by the creatures, they are unforgettable and striking, thought-provoking pieces. I am intrigued by the reaction viewers have to Piccinini's works, and it has helped me think about the importance of aesthetic, whether its hated or loved, and the outcome it can have on an idea.
