Leeds and Hull

This week I visited Leeds Art Gallery and Ferens Art Gallery in Hull to see their current exhibitions including the works of Joseph Beuys, Henry Moore and Lothar Goetz in Leeds and the 2017 Turner Prize winner and others shortlisted in Hull. Leeds Art Gallery recently underwent renovations and changes to the decisions of how to exhibit some of the work. As a result the walls of the staircase are now transformed in to a site-specific work by Lothar Goetz titled 'Xanadu.'

At Ferens Art Gallery, I seen the works of the announced winner Lubaina Himid who focuses her works around identity and contemporary political issues. Himid often works on top of domestic everyday materials such as newspaper cut outs and porcelain tableware. Some of her paintings are made as wooden cut outs, creating a feeling of a stage set installation.

A shortlisted artist of the Turner Prize that I enjoyed the work of was Hurvin Anderson. Anderson works on large scale paintings of both natural landscapes and interiors such as barbershops that explore cultural identity.

While reading 'Cut and Paste: 21st Century Collage' I came across the works of Julian House who creates vibrant pieces composed of a range of interesting and surreal imagery.

I also recently discovered the photography works of Barbara Norfleet and I was particuarly drawn to her published series 'Manscape with Beasts' which consists of abandoned man-made scenes and spaces being occupied by animals.
